I would love to be a goddess

by Jackie
(Washington)

One wishes for a lot of things, but seldom acquires them all. Some dreams remain unfulfilled in our hearts and take on a back seat as life moves forward and we get trapped in the vicious cycle of needs, day- to-day chores and requirements.

I always wanted to open a school for the poor children in my locality. Belonging to an underdeveloped nation, my heart yearns for the helpless and underprivileged. The idea was to build a place where the kids could spend their entire day. This would include education, meals and extra curricular activities. Along with imparting education, I wanted to teach them skills that would prove beneficial in their practical life. In poor countries, the man who is actually considered as skilled labor is always successful and never starves to death.

It is extremely important to know basic skills like for instance girls should be able to sew, stitch and cook well. They could also learn other crafts like pottery and candle making, painting and music. Boys should master in a strong skill like woodworking or architecture, computer programming or electrical engineering. The fields to choose from are plenty and diversified.

My idea requires a huge amount of capital and effort. Even if I could arrange for the funds by asking for donations and using my savings, where would I find the time to do so along with my job? I am a teacher by profession and deliver lectures in multiple universities. I am a single parent and thus my household expenses are run on my earnings.

This problem always stops me in my tracks and my dream remains unfulfilled. Still, I have not lost hope and am waiting for my retirement after which I can live off my pension and direct my energy in to doing something that motivates me as a human being.

I know I can make a difference in the lives of the unfortunate and I will definitely do so.

When you live with poverty all around you, it makes you question your existence. Why do I have luxuries and they don't? Am I being tested or they? How does God decide which one to bless and which one to deprive?

These questions haunt me and compel me to rise above and actually do something. I believe that each one of us is here for a reason. It's only a matter of finding it and acting upon it. No life is created uselessly and no soul exists purposeless. Each one of us has a role to play, a part to fulfill and we must do it to attain contentment and satisfaction. As a woman, I can become a goddess.
